We worked at the foot of the Vatican Museums, on the northern side of the Vatican walls between Via Leone IV and Viale Vaticano. The goal was to create a space for games and sports for the many young people who participate in the now well-known “Estate Ragazzi” (Kids’ Summer Camp). We therefore worked on the area of the Pope Wojtyla tennis court and on a raised section that serves as a roof for some warehouses.
We decided to create a soft central space, with shock-absorbent poured rubber flooring, which would serve as a connection between the changing rooms and the padel court on one side and the prefabricated above-ground swimming pool and access to the volleyball and soccer fields on the upper level on the other.
The two existing changing rooms were renovated and a shaded space for resting was created under a wooden pergola that includes a tall Washingtonia palm.
The Holy Father, Pope Francis, inaugurated the spaces in the presence of the many children to whom they were dedicated, with the message: “To you, dear girl, dear boy: you are precious in the eyes of God.”
